Armours

Humans have used all manner of materials to protect themselves from teeth, claws and blades since the old kingdoms, here are the more common armours utilised by those who wish to survive combat

Padded This is the simplest type of armour, fashioned from quilted layers of cloth and batting. It tends to get hot and after a time fouls with sweat, grime and fleas
Leather This armour is made of leather hardened in boiling oil and then shaped into a breastplate and shoulder protectors. The remainder of the suit is fashioned from softer leathers
Studded Leather This armour is made from leather, not hardened like normal leather, reinforced with close-set metal rivets
Chain mail This armour is made of interlocking metal rings. It is always worn with a layer of quilted fabric underneath to prevent painful chafing and to cushion the impact of blows. The links yield easily to absorb some of the shock of blows. Most of the weight is carried on the shoulders and is thus uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time
Ringmail A little like chain mail, this armour is composed of rings sewn directly onto a leather backing other than being interlaced
Scale mail This is a coat and leggings of leather with overlapping pieces of metal, much like the scales of a fish
Plate and Mail This armour is a combination of chain with metal plates covering vital areas. The weight is distributed over the whole body and the whole thing is held together by buckles and straps. This is the most common form of heavy armour
Field Plate This is the most common version of full plate armour, consisting of shaped and fitted metal plates riveted and interlocked to cover the entire body. A thick layer of padding must be worn underneath. Such armour only hampers movement slightly. Aside from expense, the main disadvantages are the lack of ventilation and the time it takes to put it on and off. Each suit of field plate must be individually fitted by a master armourer, although captured pieces may be resized to fit the new owner
